Surprising Covers: Sing Sing Sing

Wanna listen to what I'm talking about?  Press play!

Neither song is new but today I discovered that Chicago covered a Benny Goodman classic.  This was only after listening to Sing, Sing, Sing in all it's jazzy goodness and to hear a M&M (that is a code name for one of my humanoids sisters) ask, "Where are the lyrics?".

Frankly, I was flabbergasted.  Even I, a mutant ant, knew it was a jazz standard but I never heard any lyrics.  After looking it up I was surprised to find that Sing, Sing, Sing by Benny Goodman was a cover of another and not the first.  I found it was originally called Sing, Bing, Sing and recorded in 1936 by Louis Prima & his band by somewhat trusty Wikipedia.

M&M pulled out her iPod and played Chicago's version which looks like it is from their 1995 album Night & Day:  Big Band.  It was catchy.

Of course, now anytime I hear Sing, Sing, Sing I can't help but think of a rather silly boy playing in the yard.

Summer and Fall Gone POOF but music lives on

Well, blogging has taken a back seat to school.  Not sure how these cats with niche blogs on college do it but I got to give it to them.

Some new music gadgets I've added to my repertoire since summertime
  • Pandora.  Okay so I've been using Pandora longer than that (think way before commercials on your favorite stations & beyond).  But since they have integrated their wonderful, marvelous product into social media.... BAM... my poor fellow FaceBookers have had no reprieve.
    • For example, I've been on a HUGE Cat Stevens kick and have to restrain myself from sharing every song from his Tea for the Tillerman album.  Okay so a few sneaked through :)
  • Grooveshark.  Uhm, another I can't remember when I started using but this one was at least in '09.  I started using for Opinionated Ant when I wanted to add some audio excitement to a post.  Think Bowie's Changes it a little widget every time I announce a new feature.  Ch-ch-ch-changes.
In other musical news I'm waiting anxiously for my first mandolin.  Don't ask me what it is called, it is a cheapo from Ebay and the name is most likely a mock company for an import.  Yes, I've been educated by mandolin experts.  Perhaps, I'll post some pictures here... depends on how bad it looks when I get it.  No need to go out of my way to embarrass myself :).
